The DVRs in the Security Market today were divided into 2 major Groups; the Linux-Based DVRs and the Windows-Based DVRs. Each kind has both pros and cons. One has greater advantage over the other for specific applications. To help the readers better understand the significant differences between the two and which is more appropriate to use for a desired function, please share your knowledge on how you determine one as more advantageous and more efficient compared to the other.
Please feel free to visit my site as well and share your own significant views: http://security-made-easy.blogspot.com/2008/07/linux-based-dvr-vs-windows-based-dvr.html

Linux baesd DVR: Its functions are more stable. and some secure protocol can be changed. and some security breaches will be with dvr.
Windows baesd DVR: most people familiar with its operation and being widely used.
More ideas, to be continued.

This is a very heated topic. But coming from a technical perspective, the best will really all depend on the CCTV security application. It will stem from what the end-user is trying to accomplish. There are a variety of differences that will depict which is the overall best.
Standalone Security DVRs::
Great for simple applications and are the best when for end-users that just want to only record and have more a plug and play setup. Standalone dvrs are the most effective weapon when it comes to price! They are cheaper and for simple CCTV setups offer a very inexpensive way to setup. Recently standalone dvrs have mutated to many features that one would appreciate from a PC based DVR that runs the windows platform. Standalone units now even come with a mouse, DVD-RW back up and has network capabilities. However, the graphical user interphase is where the main difference lies. You do not have the Windows platform that most computer users now that demand security dvrs are use to. But the great thing prior to Windows is that everyone has operated a Standalone operating system. If you have interacted with a VCR, T.V. menu, and DVD player, then using the remote to navigate between the different menus should not prove to be difficult to operate. The last difference that makes a standalone dvr inferior to a PC based DVR is it's ability to expand to more channels of real-time video and real-time audio. For example a 4 channel standalone dvr, can never grow to a 8 channel, 12 channel or higher. So unless you know what your application it is hard to say whether you need to look a 4 channel PC based DVR, so that you could add additional cards and grow a system up to 24 channels.
PC Based DVRs:
PC based security DVRs are the ultimate option for any CCTV surveillance setup. The platform that PC's run on are Windows. The Windows platform allows for much more friendly graphical user interphase. Windows operating systems allows for very power Java or C++ software to interphase with your security camera's better. You will also find the best GEOVISION hardware compression video cards to be available in H.264 compression (both hardware compression and some A.I. compression and digitizing) to fit onto the PCI slots motherboard. All the video is processed on the GEOVISION card before it ever reaches the CPU. This makes for just superior video compression. Pared with 550 TV Line Sony Super HAD CCD chip-set security cameras, will render the most impressive video without the use of fiber optical transceivers or any other hi-definition technology. The DVR software that interphases with the cameras has a vast amount of user options and features. You can also enable a PC based dvr to become networkable, by assigning it an IP address. The software can enable you to remotely connect and view all you security cameras, playback video, record off site, and set cameras to different frames rates and set to motion detection. The Pentaplex support is the very best and this is just superior to most standalone digital video recorders. See for CCTV applications that have ever changing demands in options, record times, and expansion, the PC becomes the better overall dvr. Having the ability to adapt to any situation in security is really priceless. This is where PC's become the best choice.
All in all, there are many advantages to owning a standalone dvr over a PC, but that really just depends on your initial demands and what you are really trying to do. You will find that standalones work great in certain applications and in others PC's work better. Once you know what you need it becomes clear which security dvr is better for you. Standalone dvrs offer an easy "plug and play" setup and PC based dvrs offer adaptability, better overall quality and an easier graphical user interphase to work on.
